Rising Share of Downstream Multi-Variety, Small-Batch Orders Makes Modular Desig

The downstream die-casting market is currently undergoing structural changes. In addition to large-volume structural parts for new energy vehicles, demand in fields such as power tools, energy storage components, smart home, and special equipment parts is rapidly being released. The market is showing a pattern in which large-volume standardized products coexist with multi-variety, small-batch customized orders. As downstream product iteration cycles continue to shorten, new challenges are being posed to the development cycle, mold modification flexibility, and overall cost control of die-casting molds. As a result, the concept of modular mold design is gradually gaining industry attention and promotion.

Traditional die-casting molds mostly adopt fully customized monolithic structures. Once a product is changed, extensive machining modifications are often required for the cavity, runner, and overflow and venting systems, resulting in long modification cycles and high modification costs; after the product is discontinued, the reuse potential of the entire mold set is very limited. Modular die-casting molds turn the mold base, guide components, and basic cooling structure into standardized universal units, and turn cavity inserts, runner components, and venting and overflow structures into independent modules that can be quickly replaced. When a product model is iterated or derivative parts in the same series are developed, adaptation can be achieved simply by replacing the corresponding insert modules, without remaking the entire mold base, significantly shortening the development cycle and reducing the material cost of new molds.

Modular design also imposes stringent requirements on mold machining accuracy, positioning structures, and sealing reliability. It is necessary to ensure that after different inserts are interchanged, mold clamping accuracy, cooling water channel alignment, and vacuum sealing performance still meet die-casting production conditions. The industry is also improving standardized insert libraries and standard interface specifications in parallel, promoting the implementation of modular structures in small and medium-sized die-casting projects. For customers developing multiple categories, modular solutions can increase the reuse rate of mold components, shorten the time-to-market for new products, and better adapt to rapidly changing market demand. At the same time, the modular concept is also being combined with digital mold design. Standardized module databases further improve the efficiency of mold design and drawing, providing a feasible technical path for the die-casting mold industry to respond to changes in market structure.
